What Google needs
May 5th, 2007 by jamesGoogle rocks. I use Gmail, and the Google Homepage (er iGoogle) and Gcal all the time these days. But over at lifehack.org there’s a great list of the things Google needs to get. I agree wholeheartedly with the list and I feel that Google probably will implement some of the suggestions contained therein. I would like a bit more offline access, even though I’m always online when I’m at a computer. You never know when you need to get that important message or event information and your internet is down.
I see Google has been working even more on integrating their service with cell phones. My new Nokia N75 (review coming soon) gives me the ability to access Google’s services wherever I am. Even if they don’t have a mobile version of an application out. The phone’s browser and internet access speed are good enough for me to use even the full versions of Google’s applications.

Everybody b$%^&es and moans about MicroSloth and how invasive they are but they lap up the GoogleAid!
Do you really love having them help every corporation in the world figure out how to milk you of every dime you might have?
Got to www.ixquick.com and click on the bubble above and to the right of the text entry box, then read all about it.
When you use Google they goggle over every bit and byte that you store or put into one of their apps, and they even tell you they do to “better market to you.”
Type “google is evil” and “gmail is evil” into any search engine and look around.
Get a clue, folks, even if you can’t get on the train.

I’m well aware of the possible privacy implications. However, I’m not the paranoid “the sky is falling!” type of person. Your personal information is everywhere whether you like it or not. How many millions of people have had their information stolen from banks and other financial institutions that have gotten compromised? Myself, I’ve received a few letters and a couple years of free credit monitoring from companies who have had their information stolen.
It sucks but what are you going to do about it? Become a recluse from the digital era? Like it or not, Google is *the* company of the internet now. Most searches are through Google. If a few people stop using it because they don’t want Google to know everything about them it will not change anything. Webmasters can’t afford to ignore Google.
I think it is good to be concerned about your security and privacy. But boycotting Google isn’t going to change anything. They aren’t the only ones collecting your information.
You cannot drive a car without being tracked. The car records data about your driving, there are tons of highway cameras, red light cameras, cops all around, etc. All the junk mail you get from CC companies that have already scanned your credit report, etc. Your privacy and information is already out there.
The fact is Google provides useful and valuable services that are worth using. They’re only one of hundreds of thousands of companies out there making money off knowing you. But they are probably the most important company on the internet right now.
You haven’t convinced me that “Google is evil” at all.
